Vegan South Africa

How vegan friendly is South Africa?

South Africa is the only African country with a sizable vegan following and the 23rd most popular destination for vegans in the world.  Leading the way is Cape Town, with a great vegan vibe and friendly community.  They are very active and creative and that is helping the massive rise in interest here in the plant based diet.   In fact they are going back to their roots, as traditionally plant based diets are part of their culture.  Meat was only for special occasions like a ceremony or a celebration.  Traditional African meals include dishes such as yam and vegetables, Ghanaian beans and plantains, South African pap and chakalaka, and Kenyan chapati and vegetable stew.

Vegan restaurants and cafes

Cape Town has got the most restaurants, followed closely by Johannesburg.  Durban too has a good selection.  After that it's more complicated, though there are many restaurants with a vegan option as so many people are reducing their meat consumption.
